Environmental Control
Paraná Ports carry out environmental control actions and management programs for solid residues, effluents, air and noise emissions. It is also run programs for vectors proliferation control and environmental liabilities recovering, as controlling measures.
Solid Residues Management Program
Its main target is minimizing noise generation and ensuring proper handling and final destination.
Therefore, food supply is reduced, as well as rats and pigeons proliferation, which are diseases vectors.
For organization and cleaning Paraná Ports carry out a mechanical brushing, in the primary lane as well as in surroundings. More than 40 buckles were installed for correct storage of collected material.
The program encompasses training, courses, lectures and educational actions for internal and external public, and it is integrated with the Environmental Education Program.
Air Emission Management Program
Air quality is monitored in 12 points in Paranaguá and three in Antonina, at port and residential areas. Seven parameters are measured: total suspended particles levels, inhaled particles, smoke, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone and nitrogen dioxide.
Technicians also control black smoke emission released by trucks and load movement equipment. Drivers are instructed to solve eventual problems and do necessary maintenance.
In addition to it, in wharf, workers receive training to operate unload and upload equipment in order to minimize fall levels and dust generation.
Noise Emission Management Program
There are 21 points located at port and residential area in Paranaguá which are monitored on a monthly basis, at day and night. Besides checking legal limits it allows the creation of a database for strategic planning and emissions management.
Vectors Proliferation Control Program
A set of actions to control and reduce population of rodents, pigeons, mosquitos, cockroaches, bees and other vectors, through environmental management measures and daily actions.
Rodents: Control is done through traps (bait door) distributed along more that 450 points within Paranaguá and Antonina organized ports.
Pigeons: There is use of an inhibitor repellent, manual eggs removal, nests and carcasses, shelter areas reduction through physical barriers, such as meshes and grids in the warehouses, and food availability restriction through brushing the port area.
Roaming and Domestic Animals: Referral to NGO´s or specific donation institutions.
Actions to control and fight Dengue Fever
Paraná Ports promote regular awareness campaigns, to encourage prevention and fight against the proliferation of Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes. Technicians carry out larvicides application that are approved by Health Ministry and registered at ANVISA.
Environmental Liabilities Recovery Program
Remedial actions to enable recovery areas that are contaminated, damaged and/or under the risk of impact resulting from port activity.
Effluents Management Program
To prevent polluting hydric resources, Paraná Ports monitor, on a quarterly basis, biological, physical and chemical parameters of generated effluents (directed to the sanitation municipal company) and of Rainwater in six monitoring points defined within Paranaguá Organized Port area.
For each sample, 10 parameters are analysed, totalizing over 700 monthly analysis.
In addition to it, the program mapped out more than 800 manholes in the port, which are monthly monitored to verify if there is a need of unblocking, in order to avoid floods in the region.
